Allie Hankins – Our first N.E.W.E.R.

Allie Hankins has been selected to be in Studio 2′s first N.E.W.E.R. (New Expressive Works – Extended Residency).

Candidates for N.E.W.E.R. are selected from past & present N.E.W. residents, at the discretion of the Residency Director.

allienewerAllie says, “As I begin the process of creating my first evening-length show, I am grateful for the opportunity provided by N.E.W.E.R and Studio 2 to maintain a consistent practice and deep involvement with my craft. My piece expanded and evolved significantly during the N.E.W Residency in the summer/autumn of last year, so it seems fitting to embark on this stage of final development with the support of this extended residency, and the greater community associated with Studio 2. It has been inspiring to work with Suba on the design of this residency model — here’s hoping it continues to facilitate the works of many artists to come!”

Allie Hankins is a choreographer, performer, teacher, and researcher. A Seattle/Portland resident since 2008, Hankins’ work has been presented in Seattle at On the Boards’ Northwest New Works Festival,Velocity Dance Center, and Seattle International Dance Festival,The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation’s 19th Street Project Space in New York, Conduit Dance and PICA’s TBA Festival in Portland, and various venues in Minneapolis, Albuquerque, and abroad. As a collaborator, Hankins performs withSeattle-based dance/sound performance company Salt Horse, Portland-based choreographer Tahni Holt, and has designed movement for experimental theater ensemble Implied Violence (now Saint Genet), with which she toured to New York’s New Island Festival and Austria’s DonauFestival, under the tutelage of Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center. Hankins was recently an Artist in Residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida, and has received grants from Washington’s Artist Trust and Oregon’s Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Premier work by new Portland choreographer, Muffie Connelly

inductionceremony1

Induction Ceremony explores the physicality of the body in relation to the lines of intimacy and intimate relationships that blur during gestation, and continue postpartum. The obligations and necessary functions of the body and its parts, as a nurturing lifeline, are compared to the same bodily existence in a sexual context – the body as a means for pleasure. This dance performance features female performers wearing a range of repurposed pantyhose, exposing flesh and femininity as they move in and out of the extremes of bodily domination.

Portland choreographer Muffie Connelley presents this performance in collaboration with Happydog and local sound designer Eric Garcia on August 23 and 24 at 7:30pm at Studio 2@Zoomtopia on 810 SE Belmont in Portland, OR. Kelly Bartnik

Fresh from launching a three-city tour in New York City, critically acclaimed Christy Funsch and Katherine Longstreth are together again to present brand new dances in Portland at Zoomtopia’s Studio 2.  Both Funsch and Longstreth accept the limitations of our knowledge and are interested in highlighting our potential for disorientation.  Funsch’s work celebrates the vulnerable yet indefatigable spirit through choreographic experiments with gaze, distinctive movement invention, and unpredictable phrasing and Longstreth’s work examines the vulnerability and mutability of what we believe to be true and hints at the possibility for discovery once we acknowledge our essential lack of control and powerlessness.  In addition to performing, Kelly Bartnik will be screening the film, Reins, made with Geoffrey Ehrlich and commissioned by Dances Made to Order and selected for Glove Box Film Festival, Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, Third Coast Dance Film Festival, and Movies by Movers.
